Game Day Spinach Artichoke Dip

game day approved spinach and artichoke dip

There’s no better appetizer than my game day-approved Spinach Artichoke Dip. It’s the perfect combination of creamy and cheesy packed with 3 types of cheeses, minced garlic, dried herbs, and some red pepper flakes for that added kick.

Creamy & Cheesy Spinach Artichoke Dip

When you imagine Spinach Artichoke Dip the first thing that comes to mind is the iconic cheese pull you get when it’s fresh out of the oven. Often served with tortilla chips or toasted bread slices, this game day dip is notorious for being a cheese lovers dream.

Many recipes include popular stringy cheese like mozzarella, but I enjoy also adding salty cheeses like parmesan and pecorino romano.

You may be wondering – what about the creaminess? That’s where I like to incorporate a mixture of sour cream and cream cheese. Both ingredients have just enough tangy flavor and smooth texture to compliment the savoriness of the cheeses.

Fresh Spinach vs Frozen

While both versions of spinach are acceptable in this recipe, one version is slightly more convenient, while the other includes an extra bit of work.

  • Have fresh spinach? Great! Just remember that once it’s cooked, spinach shrinks in size. In this case, you’ll need to double the portion.
  • Don’t have fresh spinach? Use frozen spinach and drain the water from it once its thawed.

Tips & Tricks

With so many Spinach Artichoke Dip recipes out there, here are my tips and tricks to ensure this appetizer is the standout dish of your next game day spread.

  • Use Herb Flavored Cream Cheese. While the plain version of this spreadable cheese works just fine, the added flavors of herbs like chive and green onion make a huge difference.
  • Opt for No Mayo. Something about warmed mayo can turn people off. The texture can often look lumpy and leave an odd aftertaste for people. To be safe, just skip including it.

Can’t wait to make this. Thank you for omitting the mayo. I saw too many recipes that included mayo and it grossed me out. #TEAMNOMAYO
I’m thinking about using pepper jack cheese too.
